Review: MAC All Fired Up & Flat Out Fabulous

So I think I've already established that I'm a fan of bright lip colours, so it really was just a question of time until I caved and added a few more to my collection. My most recent additions are two retromatte MAC formulas, Flat Out Fabulous and All Fired Up. Basically, I wanted to get them ever since they were released in last year's Fall Collection, but I opted for the shade Relentlessly Red then (also included in the swatch picture above). Anyways, one year later, they're finally mine!

The MAC retromatte formula is really as matte as it gets- I've never tried anything similar. Yes, they are very dry in application, but as long as your lips are exfoliated and moisturised, they don't tug in my experience and also feel quite comfortable on the lips. The staying power of these is pretty much insane- they last for hours and also survive drinking and eating without needing much of a touch-up. Naturally, they are a bit harder to remove as your average lipstick as well- but that's a price I'm willing to pay for a fuss-free, long-lasting lipstick!

Flat Out Fabulous is described as a bright plum matte, which I think is a lot more wearable than a bright pink matte (think Candy Yum Yum) while still staying in the same shade family. While swatching it today, I thought it would probably look really cool layered with the MAC Heroine lipliner (LE), so that's definitely a look I want to try out soon.

All Fired Up comes described as being a bright fuchsia matte, and when they were released one year ago, I thought it looked a lot like Relentlessly Red. In direct comparison however you can see that Relentlessly Red is a lot warmer, while All Fired Up has a more neutral undertone. Basically, it is a super bright twist to the regular red lipstick that due to the neutral undertones pretty much suits everyone- three of my friends own this lipstick as well, and they're all entirely different types, but it still looks awesome on all of them!

Currently, MAC carries four of the retromatte lipsticks in their lineup: All Fired Up, Flat Out Fabulous, Relentlessly Red and the classic Ruby Woo - so if you're a fan of a super-matte, long-wearing lip colour and don't mind a little dryness, these are definitely worth checking out!

  1. Great review. Flat Out Fabulous definitely looks like my sort of colour! I am not usually a fan of matte lipsticks due to the dryness like you mentioned, but I am a big fan of those with staying power, so I may have to go have a swatch :).

    1. I've been dancing around these shades for almost a year because I wasn't sure about it, but in the end I mostly wear mattes and these just last forever and are just such fun and bright colours, I just had to get them! I love that they're in the permanent range now! :)
