How to shop for high end makeup

How to shop for high end makeup

I don't know what exactly it is that makes a grown woman think "Oh, I should totally spend 35€ on a lipstick, that sounds like a great investment!" - fact is, it happens to me too. (Then again, this is coming from the same person that started to invest in chelsea boots just because she likes how they look on Harry Styles.) The thing is, if you're going to spend a lot of money on a high end makeup item, there's a few things you should consider before blowing your hard-earned money on items you won't use.

1. Do your research

I rarely go out and buy things on a whim. Most times, I actually have to swatch a lipstick more than once in the shop before I actually make my mind up and buy it. Even then, sometimes my friends have to enable me and tell me why it's a great idea to buy yet another lipstick (thanks guys). When I'm browsing blogs and see a particular makeup item I like and a voice in the back of my mind says "Treat yourself!", I usually start to do a bit of research on the product before I go out and buy it. I google swatches, read reviews - you know how it is. The internet is a huge source of information about everything, expensive makeup included. Seeing a picture of a pretty lipstick doesn't make the cut - if you're gonna invest into that Charlotte Tilbury lipstick, you better make sure you'll actually like it!

2. Don't buy into the hype

To be quite honest, I've given up on most big YouTubers. Sure, I still watch these girls' videos, but in 90% of cases, I don't believe much of the reviews they give on products. That might be cynical of me, but that's just how it is. Especially when one particular product is making the rounds on YouTube and gets overhyped, I'm very careful. Just because a makeup item is popular, doesn't mean that it's going to suit me or that I'm going to like it. Obviously it's quite possible that hyped up products actually are awesome and perform well - usually, I wait for a couple of weeks and if I'm still interested in a particular item that I've seen making the rounds, I revert to point 1) - and do my research! :)

3. Buy what you'd actually wear

To me, that's the most important tip. I feel like a lot of people like to treat themselves with expensive products just for the sake of it, but have no actual use for it. If you're a lover of neutrals, buying Tom Ford's Bruised Plum lipstick just because it's pretty and comes with a hefty price tag won't make you happy. I really think there is no use in buying an expensive makeup item that's going to sit on your vanity collecting dust because it's just for "special occasions" (that never come). Spending money on yourself is an awesome feeling, so make the most of it - buy something you will actually get a lot of wear of in your day to day life! Basic bitch life tip: If you want to treat yourself and aren't sure what to get for yourself, buy a matte classic red lipstick with neutral undertones. It suits everyone, promise.

So, what do you guys think? Anything to add? :)
